Green Politics
The world is in a pretty sorry state and I believe that we all have a responsibility to try to do something about it. If we don't, then this beautiful earth will, in just a few generations' time, become all but uninhabitable by human life.
The scary thing is that between us we know what needs to be done and we have the technology to do it - and yet still we are not doing it. Of course we could all change things greatly as individuals - by travelling less, consuming less, insulating better our homes, etc. And many of us are trying. But frankly even if 90% of the world's population were converted to the most sustainable kind of lifestyle possible, the other 10% would still manage to destroy the planet if they continued living as most people in the "developed" world do currently.
That is why we need some major initiatives at a government level to ensure that certain activities can only be carried out in a sustainable way. But there simply is not the political will to do anything sufficiently drastic enough to make a big enough difference. And that goes for pretty much every government at every level in every country of the world.
I have stood for election for the Green Party in both local council (Colchester) and county council (Essex) elections and for the European Parliament in 2009. I came second in my ward at both the 2007 and 2008 district council elections, well ahead of both the Conservative and Labour candidates and nicely poised for a future win! I won't be able to change very much alone, but I'm determined to do my best to make a difference. And I won't be alone. I'll be working to get other Green candidates elected. The Green Party already has 125 councillors at principal authority level in England, as well as members of the London Assembly, the Scottish Parliament, the Welsh Assembly, the Northern Ireland Assembly, the House of Lords and two MEPs. We are already making a difference and will soon be making an even bigger difference!
